Antacids - Tums, Rolaids - Are Harmful Too

Screen Shot 2018-10-08 at 8.19.56 AM.png

Basic antacids - Tums, Rolaids and other over-the-counter antacids reduce stomach acid just like Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). We need strong stomach acid to: sanitize food, digest (liquify) food, dissolve minerals, and promote beneficial bacteria - among other things. Without strong acid helping you absorb nutrients you are malnourished, which may explain hunger and weight gain.

Nexium, Prolsec (proton pump inhibitors and other acid blockers) reduce stomach acid and cause similar affects to basic antacids. They create further problems because they reduce stomach acid significantly and cause a "rebound" effect when you stop them. Thus, getting off "PPIs" can be a slow process.

Basic antacids present a different problem. Most of these products contain large amounts of calcium. While calcium through your food is good - current research shows that calcium supplements are bad. Too much calcium intake without sufficient "helpers" to make sure calcium goes to the right place (bones) causes hardening of the arteries and related heart diseases. People on antacids and calcium supplements for long periods of time have more heart attacks!
