Redox Reactions: Redox is a common term in chemistry and biology.
In chemistry, a redox reaction is one of the chemical reactions involving the transfer of electrons between atoms and molecules.
In this reaction, one species loses electrons while the other gains electron.
The species that gain the electron is said to be reduced, while the species that lost the electron is oxidized.[I]
Redox is foundational to biological processes such as cellular respiration and photosynthesis. For example, a redox reaction occurs in cellular respiration when
glucose is oxidized to carbon dioxide, whereas
oxygen is reduced to water.
This is similar to burning gasoline in your vehicle engine but is much more efficient because the energy is converted mostly to work, not heat, with the help of enzymes.
