Dr. Thomas Sowell highlights the pinnacle of false information. But in politics, this is standard operating procedure. IT SHOULD NOT BE THE CASE IN SCIENCE.
Here we have the renowned biologist, Gary Brecka, stepping into the ring with some rather questionable claims (I pity the fools who believe him).
YOU CAN SEE FROM HIS EXPRESSION - THAT LIKE OBAMA - WHAT HE IS SAYING IS INSPIRATIONAL.
His argument about cold therapy is that 3-6 minutes per day is THE MOST effective way to lose weight - nothing compares.
He argues that weight loss is about energy consumption, and it takes 1 calorie to raise 1 gram of water one degree "centigrade." You can tell he is not a scientist because scientists use the correct term, Celcius.
Thus, if you do a 50 F water "plunge" (he couldn't convert this to Celsius - but it is 10C), you can lose weight better than "any amount of exercise" (which creates heat - by burning calories.... Hmmmm)
He forgets some "minor" details concerning the heating and cooling of water and core body temperature.
First: Getting into cold water (10 C) does NOT lower your core temperature to 10 C.
Second, our bodies work hard to stay cool and are constantly burning fuel and producing heat, so it's easier to warm up than cool down.
Third: When you get very cold, you shiver - which is "induced" exercise.
MOST IMPORTANTLY - HE COMPLETELY IGNORED THE ENERGY REQUIRED TO EVAPORATE (SWEAT).
THIS IS SIMPLE MATH - HANG IN THERE.
It takes 1 calorie to raise 1 gram of water 1 C (1 degree Celsius)
It takes 540 calories to evaporate 1 gram of water**
Example: In a cold plunge, your core temperature drops 1 degree Celsius
Through exercise or sauna, your core temperature elevates 1 degree Celsius
In the cold plunge, you do NOT sweat (evaporate water)
In exercise and/or sauna, you DO SWEAT.
Which one requires more energy - thus burns more fat potentially.
The answer is obvious—without the sweating, the energy required to restore balance is the same. But the loss of moisture through evaporation requires 54,000% more energy on a per-unit basis. THUS COOLING BACK DOWN AFTER SAUNA OR EXERTION USES WAY MORE ENERGY.
I've only watched this guy twice - and twice, he was full of it. The last time, he stated that red light stimulated cytochrome C oxidase. It does not. Orange light does, however. It took me less than one minute to find the absorption spectrum of cytochrome C oxidase to see the folly of his thesis.
29,000 people viewed the full video and think they can take a shortcut to weight loss by dipping in 50 degrees Fahrenheit water daily for 5 minutes. I guess it is such a painless solution that it can become popular for a time in a world full of misinformation, even by so-called experts.
***(this is at 100 C, but takes more at lower temperatures - because higher temps have more energy)
